The Environmental Policy Clinic presents its video supporting elephant-free circuses in New York State, an issue currently the subject of proposed state legislation. Thank you to all who assisted with the production, including  People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and conservationist Carl Safina.

Make New York a safer, kinder place. End the movement of exotic animals within our borders and reward those circuses that amaze us with cruelty-free shows. Let’s truly make it the Greatest Show on Earth.

“We will never have animals in our shows. They are animals not performers, they should be in the jungle.”

                                                – Pierre Parisien: Cirque du Soleil

Update, 5/19 | In February, Janice Aria, director of animal stewardship at the Ringling Brothers Center for Elephant Conservation, discussed the PETA footage used in this video. In related news, on May 15th, the Humane Society and other animal-welfare groups (not including PETA) paid a $15.75-million settlement to Feld Entertainment, the parent company of Ringling Brothers, after a U.S. District Court ruled the groups’ lawsuit against the company was “frivolous,” “vexatious,” and “groundless and unreasonable from its inception.” (The court also noted that a former circus employee who joined the groups in the suit was paid $190,000.)
